Homework: study for the Unit 1 test that will be on Wednesday- use your pink study guide
Today we reviewed the study guide answers and played Silly Says!
Homework: study for the Unit 1 test that will be on Wednesday- use your pink study guide HAPPY EARLY RELEASE DAY!!! Today we used cards and a large 3-bubble Venn diagram to compare and contrast comets, asteroids, and meteors. Then … we did a disco! Asteroid! Meteorite! Asteroid! Meteorite! Meteor!!!! Below is the song we danced to- enjoy the 1970s!
Today we had a lesson from Mrs. Crandall, our 6th grade counselor. Tomorrow we will continue looking at characteristics of comets, asteroids, and meteors.
Homework: watch the Bill Nye episode on Comets and Meteors by Thursday- see yesterday's blog post for the link and embedded video Today we took notes on and discussed asteroids, comets, and meteors. Homework: watch the Bill Nye episode on Comets and Meteors- CLICK HERE to be taken to youtube to watch the episode, or watch it below Go explore! This site is so cool and there's lots to investigate! Check it out!
https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/ Today we took notes on type of galaxies: spiral (swirly octopus), elliptical (twinkie), and irregular (blob). We also talked about size and composition comparison of the UNIVERSE, galaxies, and our solar system. Click here if you want to visit the scale of the universe site we explored today.
Homework: finish the Formations of Our Solar System questions if you haven't completed it yet Today students took the 6th grade science SGM (Student Growth Measure) test on the computer. This is used as a pretest for the entire year to show what students already know and to set a baseline for what they learn this year. This same test will be taken at the end of the school year and the two scores will be compared to show their Student Growth Score. Neither will be a grade in the gradebook- it's for data collection and to guide our instruction.
After the test, students worked on an assignment called "The Formation of Our Solar System" but it wasn't homework- we'll finish it tomorrow. Homework: watch the Bill Nye: Planets episode by Friday- see Monday's blog post for the link to YouTube or watch the embedded video on my blog Today we took some notes on size and scale in the universe. Tomorrow we will take the SGM (year-long pre-test which is not for a grade).
Homework: watch the Bill Nye: Planets episode by Friday. See yesterday's post for the link/video. Today we completed our second set of Astronomy Hands-on Activities, including seeing scaled models of the distance between the Earth and Moon (tennis ball and aluminum foil), how mass impacts gravity and therefore weight, how detail visibility changes with distance, and how density and angle change impact craters (flour and cocoa powder EVERYWHERE!!). Homework: Watch the Bill Nye episode called Planets by Friday- CLICK HERE to go to it on youtube or you can watch it below Today we collected the planet postcard projects, completed 3 stations called "Astronomy Hands-on Activities, Part 1" and then finished writing the Pluto argumentative paragraph. The lab stations consisted of creating a scaled model showing the distances between the planets using toilet paper, calculating our age on each planet, and experiencing the difficulties involved with launching rockets toward an object considering the rotation of Earth.
Homework: finish Pluto argumentative paragraph- due tomorrow (see Friday's post for the file of instructions if you need it) |
